Almost everyone that I interact with everyday knows that I have been a long time fan of So Nyeo Shi Dae (Girl’s Generation). I have been spazzing (google it) about the 9 girls for almost a year now. I even made it a point to know YoonA’s blood type so that on the rare event that YoonA accidentally fall off the stage while performing (God forbids), I will be able to donate my blood to save her. No, my blood isn’t actually compatible with hers but I am willing to change my blood type, even if it costs me my life. (I Kid, I Kid
) I’ve watched every darn performance, I’ve listened to all of their albums (Listened is an understatement, the album collection is on a loop on my mp3 player), and I followed the girls’ adventure by watching their T.V shows (Girls Go To School, Factory Girl, etc). Yes, I am an obsessed fan who smiles when listening to Gee at 5:00 AM before going to sleep. And I can actually enumerate those 9 girls’ names faster than I can name the last five presidents of our country. So yeah, I’m a big fan.
Just recently, KPOP bands started becoming popular in the Philippines. I believe it all started when the news about Sandara Park (Yes, this is her) being part of a Korean Girl Group reached the Philippines. As Dara (her cool Korean nickname, we just call her Krung-Krung here) was a big star here in the Philippines, the media got curious and actually gave a f*ck about KPOP. Fire, their first single I believe, entered the local hit chart and every stupid emo kid everywhere was like “ZOMG, I know that girl. KPOP is so cool~~~~ KAWAII! I love Japan” without actually having a clue on what their talking about. So those little emo kids searched the interwebz and the youtubez and found Wonder Girl’s “Nobody” and spammed the local hit charts and radio stations with request of this song. That did it, the Hallyu was in full effect in the Philippines. With Nobody’s addictive chorus (which was incidentally in English), it reached mainstream media faster than you can say “Anyeong Haseo!”. From FM’s 102.7, to Mike Enriquez’s Saksi, there was no escaping Nobody. Even Jollibee and his close friend Chuckie from KFC wasn’t invulnerable to the craze. Nobody was everywhere!
When all of this “KPOP Insanity” was happening, I was quietly downloading all the SNSD videos on Youtube I can get my hands on and then watching them again and again and again till 5:00 AM in the morning or until my mom catches me and scold me to sleep. And while watching the very heart warming Kissing You music video, I was really hoping and praying (I do it once a decade) that SNSD won’t reach the mainstream media here in the Philippines. Almost a month passed and no news about SNSD on the local hit charts. I was relieved.
One fateful day came when a schoolmate popped me on Facebook and said “I just saw SNSD’s Genie on MYX”. I was shocked to say the least! So I asked “Where? On the hit charts?” and I was delighted when she said “On Myx Premiere”. That just meant that the Myx people are just premiering the new Genie song. So I quickly headed over to Soshified and warned everyone to never request for any SNSD songs on MYX. Months passed, and I was overjoyed that the pinoy SONES (local SNSD fans) over at Soshified heeded my warning. But I couldn’t be more wrong. Just a few weeks ago, SNSD entered the local hit chart. It was the result of an effort spearheaded by a pinoy SONE over at Soshified to “mass vote” SNSD’s Genie. SNSD went from rank 20 to 9 in just two weeks! That isn’t surprising at all given the girls’ charm and the wonderful song. As a fan, I should be happy about this. I should be throwing house parties every week to celebrate. BUT I AM NOT. In fact, I hate that SNSD’s Genie is being transmitted on local airwaves.
So why am I not thrilled about SNSD’s popularity here in the Philippines?
JOLOGS
I don’t really know how to define Jologs but I will try to give an example on how something can achieve the Jologs status. Say a certain footwear became the “in” thing in the Philippines. This footwear is really expensive for just a pair of rubber stuff being worn on the smelliest part of the human body. But since the Philippines has that creativity to pirate anything fast, the said footwear now cost only 50 pesos and is readily available at your local tiangge. Now everyone from your driver, to your labandera’s son owns the identical footwear you are wearing. The footwear is now “mainstream” in the sense that the “representative population” of the Philippines (AKA “the masses”) can now own and wear the footwear. Congratulations, your footwear is now jologs.
So back to my point… Since SNSD is now accessible to the masses via the mainstream local media, like the poor footwear who has once prided itself as the “most expensive rubber stuff you are wearing on the smelliest part of your body”, as hard and painful it is for me to admit, SNSD will soon be jologs. And no matter how much I love and care for SNSD, I can’t stop it. I’m just an obsessed fan with a “KPOP boy band”-like hairstyle.
Like Wonder Girls’ Nobody, SNSD songs will be played over and over again everywhere to oblivion. Here’s the list of what I think will transpire over the weeks as SNSD reaches the top 1 spot on the local hit charts:
- Willie Revillame will dance Gee on Wowowee
- The Sex Bomb Girls will perform a cover of Genie
- Maja Salvador, Erich, and that other girl (ASAP) will perform a “sucky” (”poor” to be more polite) rendition of Kissing You (With the lollipop and all)
- Kids from Divisoria will be shown on T.V. dancing Gee from a loud boom box playing from a “pirated” music store
- Bubble Gang will parody SNSD
- Mainstream Media will talk about SNSD (and mixing/confusing them with 2NE1 and WG)
- “Malilibog” (Dirty old) jeepney drivers will have the SNSD posters on their jeeps with indecent markings.
- A “disco remix” of SNSD song’s will be available in Divisoria’s pirated music stores
- Infinite jologsness to come…
However, even if SNSD becomes jologs, I think my love for the 9 girls will outweigh the harm done by the local media. I will still watch my SNSD video collection until 5:00 AM in the morning or until my mom scold me to sleep for staying up late, I will still have my mp3 player play SNSD’s album collection, and I will still buy SNSD albums from Yes! Asia. If this unfortunate event changed something, that would be me changing my phone’s ring tone from SNSD’s Kissing You back to Nokia’s standard tone.

PS: I am particularly interested if the “jologs” mentality applies to other countries as well.

(20 votes, average: 3.30 out of 5)

Hi there, I’m the “just watched asap” guy and “elitist much” guy.
I said before that:
“I can now see the reason for hating these masa side-effects of popularity. Although, thinking of it as an “only in the Philippines” and “only the poor are guilty” phenomenon is where we reach our crossroads. I know people, who do not qualify as a masa-crowd, who treat kpop lightly that would offend any kpop fans (even before the so-called kpop fever). I guess it just happens to anyone, something important for someone is insignificant to someone else.”
and you replied:
“I am very interested in this phenomenon. I have yet to find a country that have this same phenomenon. I have reasons to believe that our culture and current demographics are the ones to blame.”
Well, I was looking at the comment section of an All Kpop article: http://www.allkpop.com/2010/06/a-taiwanese-variety-show-with-kpop-dance-flavor/
Comment number 41:
“oks dont hate taiwan ppl/ varitry shows…
But now they touches kpop i get angry…
Cant they use their own country music and do cover??? Whyy must they touches kpop suddenly???and on that channel it is mostly kpop!!!!! Is it suppose to be a korean channel???
Urghs.. Stick to their own music can??!?
They all uses kpop as if they really like kpop, it is an insult to us kpops lovers…!!! More ppl sudd craze into kpop and act they know alot from this….what is this!!!!!!!
### no harm to taiwanese ppl oks??? Understand???
+,just my own point of view…ask finnaly someone posted it…this has maket me upset and angry for the pass few week alrdd lahs…..”
I specially like this part:
“They all uses kpop as if they really like kpop, it is an insult to us kpops lovers…!!! More ppl sudd craze into kpop and act they know alot from this….what is this!!!!!!!”
I think this is really the issue of many pinoy kpop fan. The fact that it has become a fad in the eyes of many that being a real fan is no longer distinguishable from those teens (I expect most are teens) riding in the “in thing”. Are only the masa guilty of this? I don’t think so, though I think it’s how the masa manifest their interest in this fad that is killing you.
Great find! I would like to personally talk with Commenter #14 about the KPOP “situation” in Taiwan.
I love you for being a huge fanboy. I can understand your feelings. xD
Think of the brighter side, local music stores sell SNSD and other kpop CDs with free posters, for a cheaper price compared to purchasing online.
Anyway, I’ll share something.
I went to the 4minute mall tour in SM Megamall. I was just watching 4minute sign CDs (it’s once in a lifetime, I am a fangirl. xD) and so I was there, just watching. Then a couple of girls came near beside me to have a glimpse of the girls, and it seemed like they were spazzing or sth. So I thought they were fans. But what got onto my nerves was, one of the girls said, “Nasaan si Sandara?” then the other girl said, “Wala naman eh. Tara alis na tayo.”
Grr. Magtatagalog muna ako. lol. Nakakaasar, ang laki laki kaya nung mga tarps na nakasulat “4MINUTE” dun sa event center. Andami dami pang nagkalat na mga posters at tarps nila sa buong mall. Won’t they bother to at least READ THEM? WTF!
BASTA KOREAN, SANDARA NA AGAD. Sorry, I just don’t like how they stereotype Kpop girl groups as Sandara’s group or something. O.O
I would have to admit, when my “ex” showed me Gee for the first time, and asked me “if I like Koreans”, the first image that came to mind was Sandara so I answered “No, what’s so special about them?”. After watching the video, I commented “What’s with the video? They all look the same, but they’re cute”. So I understand where those people are coming from. Give them a break.
Like you, I can’t stop my self from swearing when I hear comments like “What’s so special about them? They all look like Sandara Park.”.
I’m a huge fan of SNSD myself but not kpop in general. but I think SNSD becoming popular in the Philippines is not that bad, why? because SNSD becoming popular in the philippines means there will be a chance of them having a concert here
.
LOL at Kissing You by —— Girls. Yeah, Kissing You is also my favorite SNSD song and video, the performance by that 5 member group was ok, though of course, not “perfect”. The fans of that group probably didn’t like the “Tell Me” of SNSD as well.
About the hypothetical sexbomb question, I was not imagining them trying to sing it (like any non-native speaker of any language, proper accent can’t be expected), the dance, I’m positive they can do it. The over-all performance, maybe yes, maybe not, it would be too much to expect.
About the second part, let’s see, I was referring to the annoyance cause by people to us (fans of kpop or anime or whatever former non-mainstream interest) when our interest suddenly becomes a casual interest for them. It’s as if our passion is treated as an insignificant fad that will just pass.
Now that has nothing to do with social status nor the country. Of course, your specific rant against jologs, though for me seems to be under the situation I’ve given, MIGHT be or not unique to our country. I don’t have the info to back it up.
Although if ever this mentality against jologs is unique to our country (and as you what have said before:
“There was always a divide between the poor people and the rich. It has always been like that in this country so stop kidding yourself. One way or the other, you’ve acted as an “elitist” in your life.”
You’re probably right but if ever I’ve acted like an “elitist” before (I think I had), I’m not proud of it. I don’t think we have to contribute on the perpetuation of this divide, worse, proclaim support in prolonging it.
I don’t see myself disagreeing with your assumption on how ASAP prepared for RDR, you’re probably right. Which actually stressed out my point, the performance would have not been that bad if more preparation was given for it.
As for the dance steps being related to the concept, etc, well, reading that part of your reply reminded me of kpop fanwars. Much like some 2ne1 fans and/or Kara fans questioning the relevance of SNSD’s steps with RDR. So I guess, objectivity is not to expected.
By the way, a rather playful question, if your fear of a sexbomb dance number (yah, the horror) actually materialize BUT the sexbomb girls were able to pull it off (the dance steps, coordination, etc) properly, would you hate it? Objectively, the sexbomb girls are capable enough to do SNSD dance steps. hehehe, just curious.
I can now see the reason for hating these masa side-effects of popularity. Although, thinking of it as an “only in the Philippines” and “only the poor are guilty” phenomenon is where we reach our crossroads. I know people, who do not qualify as a masa-crowd, who treat kpop lightly that would offend any kpop fans (even before the so-called kpop fever). I guess it just happens to anyone, something important for someone is insignificant to someone else.
If you’re just referring to the dance (the actual movement of bones and muscles that forms actions) per se, then I think they can pull it off. However, if you’re referring to the “performance”, I don’t think they’ll be able to pull it off. Don’t get me wrong, this is not me and my typical “hatred” for them, even a 5-member KPOP girl group (will not name them for fear of being flamed
) wasn’t able to gave a “perfect” rendition of Kissing You (but at the very least, its acceptable and quite adorable too!)
I am very interested in this phenomenon. I have yet to find a country that have this same phenomenon. I have reasons to believe that our culture and current demographics are the ones to blame.
I know I said I won’t comment again, hehehe. I’m the “jologs = mediocre?” guy.
I’ve just watched the ASAP RDR.
I’ll be honest, I consider myself as an SNSD fan (since the Gee days) and I do not like the ASAP version.
Let’s us just focus on the ASAP performance (I still do not agree with your opinion being against SNSD’s popularity here).
ASAP made me appreciate more how good the girls (SNSD) are. Keep in mind though that these ASAP dancers are celebrities who probably prepared for the dance for 3-4 hours. I’m not saying that’s ok, they should have practiced more. Doing a remix version, was not that bad for me, though again, their execution itself is annoying. I still believe in Filipino talent (clearly, not the one seen in that ASAP performance or most variety shows, they rely much on star power) but the performance could have been given more justice if more time for preparation was made.
Now, am I hating the fact that SNSD hit no. 1 in Myx thus triggering the said production number? Still, NO!
It spreads the love and appreciation for SNSD. Yes, some ignorant people (the kung-ano-uso-yun-ang-gusto crowd, not necessarily from the masa crowd, more likely are teenagers of all social status) will like it in ways that most Kpop fans will not approve of. Still, as an SNSD fan, I believe that any positive recognition for the girls makes me happy.
Just like in Korea or any country, SNSD (or any other groups) have casual fans or someone who treat them lightly. To the blogger (Ian right?), I still believe its your elitist way of thinking that’s making you hate the fact that more and more from the masa are appreciating SNSD or Kpop for that matter.
I can somehow say that I experience this dislike for having my interest accessible to more people. I’m an anime enthusiast. I watched Naruto way before it was aired in the Philippines. It annoyed me that when it was aired here, all of a sudden, every one were “ninjas” and talk how they knew Naruto without really having a clue beyond the show. It vexed me that, I, who spent a lot of time reading about Naruto, heck researching, are hearing people talk about Naruto like its just a fad. And yes, I hated seeing the poor-quality posters available everywhere.
Sounds much like your dislike for the sudden interest in SNSD of other people.
Now how do I feel about it? Nothing, I don’t care. I’m secure with myself as an anime fan. I let others have their way, I’ll continue being the anime fan that I am.
Now I also like Kpop (more on SNSD and some other groups). I watch subs of Korean programs, read song translations, research about them, etc. Yes, it may make me sigh or have my eyes roll whenever I hear someone say “I like Girls Generation” when all they know about SNSD are the videos played in Myx.
BUT, in the end, I’m still happy SNSD is making waves in Asia including the Philippines.
And again, I still do not agree with your jologs bias against our country.
Like you, I am no longer that annoyed that KPOP is now mainstream locally. The best word to describe it is nonchalance. And also like you, I am still a proud KPOP fan (albeit the biggest supporter of SNSD).
However, unlike you, I can’t turn a blind eye on the people responsible for murdering RDR in ASAP. And unlike you, I blame this to the mediocrity that is prevalent in the Filipino culture.
So let us analyze a little further ASAP’s RDR: Why is it so sucky then?
One late morning (say 9 am), the PD of ASAP said “Hey guys, KPOP is so in. Let’s do a KPOP number.” This PD then texted someone from Myx and asked “what is the coolest KPOP song today?” and someone from Myx replied “RDR from that band with 9 cute girls… I forgot the name”. So the PD told the alalay to search this “RDR song” on the Internetz and notify the gay choreographer that we need a choreography for that song later this afternoon. So the alalay found RDR and showed it to the gay choreographer. The gay choreographer, who I bet is not an expert on KPOP choreography, arrogantly said “That’s easy. I can choreograph that in an hour. Just give a me a pretty actress and a bunch of douchebags”. And then the gay choreographer taught these people his choreography for about an hour and they practiced for about 3 hours, and then that’s it.
They didn’t even cared what the song is about (How the hell is the PEACE sign related to RDR?), they didn’t gave much thought about the concept. They just murdered it. And did you see the look on that actress’ face? She looked so ashamed. Wearing a smile that said “my elitist friend from high society will now hate me for dancing KPOP — because KPOP is not cool but Justin Biever and Lady Gaga is”.
And you know why they didn’t care? Why should they? Their main audience are the MASA which do not care at all about all of these stuff. When they see their beloved artist look slutty on stage, they’re already freakin satisfied!
Local noon time shows are marketed to these type of people (MASA). People like us who care more about quality and concept are not relevant to them (ASAP). And this is why I am pissed off. We deserve better, but because of the MASA, we are not being heard.
PS: I am particularly interested if the “jologs” mentality applies to other countries as well.
as piracy is a part of your definition of jologs
some countries have pirated stuff too
in korea, there are some items with faces of kpop artists printed on it such as mugs, wall clocks, notebooks, etc.
in thailand, same applies
parodys are also a hit in some countries
actually before, i have the same sentiments as you do
but now, i try to understand
with their music being in the mainstream, we could support them even we’re in the philippines
fans who could afford are the ones who could only buy the korean released goods (price + shipping = MONEY!!)
but now, you could purchase them for around 500pesos
it will also lessen the chances of downloading
chances of kpop artists performing in our country will also be big, just like shinee, suju, fti, 4min and ukiss
but it makes miss my old fandom
where the “masa” are not aware of kpop
where there are no haters
where it’s okay even if people thinks you are weird
where there is peace in the fandom
hehehe
Oh yeah, I miss the old times too… When people will just go “weird dude” when I tell them that I listen to “Korean songs”.
Now it’s more like “gay dude”, fag, jologs, etc.
a Filipino bashing other fellow Filipinos… want to have SNSD for himself -_-
I get your point. I really do. Here’s what I have got to say.
Firstly, I empathize with your concern. However, the recognition that SNSD has garnered in the Philippines (thanks to local media) is one step in helping them expand their popularity. Here are two points: 1. Kpop is widely popular in other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Thailand. These are rich countries and they have the purchasing power. It should be an honor that the PH is also a part of that wagon. 2. The Korea-Ph friendship thing is not enough if we want kpop artists to be distinguished in the country. We need to show them we have the purchasing capability and that we have a strong fanbase.
The piracy is inevitable simply because we are not a rich country. We are mostly comprised of the masses, the majority of below middle-earners who will choose to buy food than an album. Piracy is their only chance of experiencing the wave and nobody should judge them for that.
I, myself am proud that SNSD has garnered such popularity. The only problem I see is, these artists are not properly introduced. They put out a song and voila, that’s it. Only Sones like us bother to know the story behind the girls. That might be the reason why you are reacting this way. You know them too well and refuse to ‘desecrate’ that cognition.
Please don’t get me wrong. This is only my opinion too.
oh my gosh. i’m so happy while reading your blog. i totally can relate to you. ganyan rin ksi naffeel ko. i have to admit, one attitude of fangirls/fanboys is sometimes being selfish when it comes to our idols. i’m a big fan of super junior. eversince na air yung neorago/it’s you sa myx, i was so pissed off. akala nman ng mga vjs na yan kung sinu sila. they dont even know suju yet kung makaasta sila, feel na feel nilang twagan yung super junior na suju.[bsta. inis tlga ako] what made me explode as in super was when the boys of ASAP performed sorry sorry. parang what the hell!!!! ang pangit ng pagkasayaw. kalat kalat yet other fil elfs[not all] were so into it. gustong gusto nila. i dont get it. for me, only supper junior has the right to dance sorry sorry… tas nkkainis pa, kht saan narrinig ko na yan. good thing hndi pa rin ngbago yung love for super junior & kpop. naiinis rin ako everytime na nsa myx yung mga kpop songs. nkaromanize pa yung lyrics.
i feel bad na ngmmukhang jologs yung mga idols ntn dto.
thanks for posting this. now i know that i’m not alone in this battle. XDD
Wow, I didn’t know that most (?) pinoy ELF weren’t offended by that ASAP performance.
All I know is, most, if not all, Pinoy SONES almost rallied in front of ABS-CBN when they murdered RDR.
how i wish ganyan rin yung ibng elfs lalo na yung mga may gusto sa performances in asap. kso gustong gusto nila ee. ako yung ngmmukhang “kontrabida” kpag ngccomment ako ng bad stuff sa youtube. sbi nga yung iba hndi ko raw naaappreciate yung effort ng local artists. hndi tlga. since binababoy nila yung sayaw ng idol ko. T_T
I LOLed at “Willie Revillame will dance GEE on Wowowee”.
Anyway, what you are saying is DEFINITELY TRUE. I really hate it when people-who-doesn’t-know-kpop-but-always-watching-myx become an “INSTANT FAN” because they only saw k-pop artists being played without even knowing them.
You have written this quite late in 2009 and the ramifications you presented are really showing itself now.
As mentioned in the last reply ASAP XV MURDERED Run Devil Run in both music and dance. This is one of the reasons why I disdain local variety shows. If you’re going to copy it, then copy it right damnit.
We fans hold the songs in high esteem that’s why we do not want it to go mainstream. Knowing the love of filipinos for novelty songs, we already felt the need to protect the artists and songs from the masses. KBP published a finding that the average mental age of a TV viewer is 4 years old so it would not surprise me why people such as our writer, and at some points myself, do not want the songs to go mainstream. It would be dilluted and dumbed down for the masses in which the song would lose its integrity.
ASAP XV rendition was worst thing ever and I’ve seen a lot of dance covers in video streaming sites.
Let the killing end there. Stop local variety shows from murdering these songs.
I know what you mean….. A while ago I just watched ASAP and I saw them dancing Run Devil Run by SNSD…. I can’t stop myself from saying bad words… MY brother was so shocked to hear me swearing but I just really can’t help it… ow come on… I’ve been also a fan since the release of their song GEE and since then I follow and watch all their shows in YouTube…. As I watch the Gigger boys or whatever they are called I just can’t help myself from getting mad…. They just danced with the music without fully understanding the meaning of the song…. Hello!!!! They say that they are amazed by the fans who actually like them even without understanding their songs… But they are wrong…. We have the Soshi subbers who never gets tired to translate Korean language to English language…. HMmmPh…. I’m really annoyed…. And now they are trying to produce songs that sounds like Kpop…. Hahaha…. Here is just what I’m going to say to those who try to imitate KPop…. Get real people!!!! Before you can imitate them well you should train for at least 5 to 8 years… It is not an easy task to just become like SNSD, Super Junior etc. you have to train like there is no tomorrow until you become like that…. Did you get that…. FREakS!!!!!!
Thanks for the heads up! Just saw it on Youtube. I’ve already predicted this on my previous post… Cheap remix and Clueless local copycat artists
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXLR0Dm9P2c
PS: Who is that girl? Skill = 0; Talent = 0; Looks = 4
PSS: Kim Yuna performed a better rendition of RDR… on a fuckin ICE RINK! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcdxnRZ_hRA
These people are the reason why we are still a third world country. On second thought, its not really their fault isn’t it? Why would you give your 100% if majority of the people that will watch it are from the class C and D demographics who have mediocre expectations?
i agreed to every thing you’ve said.. and i can also relate to this b’cuz i’ve been a fan of SNSD ever since..
i’ve also been watching there vids and reality shows on youtube, when user accounts uploading snsd where not suspended by youtube management..
im a bit selfish you know, this feeling that snsd were ours(true fan^_^) exclusively is gone..
what you’ve written was somewhat what i had in mind before snsd “ruled” the charts in myx and well, it is still is.. when kpop was booming here in the phils, i was also hoping that snsd will not go to that extend or in you words, will be in the mainstream ‘coz of what people can do to their songs and to them.. i have also been sick of filipinos making parodies, tagalizing songs and other stuff.. my term for that is “pambabastos” (and ayokong mabastos ang snsd dito sa phils) and if i understand correctly, you call this the being “jologs” of something..
anyway, since they are garnering that attention (thanks to FilSones), let’s just hope that this attention will represent their worth and existence in the kpop industry.. and as well as praying that those things you mentioned will not happen (IN ANY WAY..)..
you do sound elitist but i understand how you are feeling.. i feel like that too.. sometimes these things cannot be understood by the mass here in the phils.. anyway, being selfish about somthing that you like is not THAT bad, ‘coz people cannot understand and cannot feel the depth of your (OUR) fandom for the girls..
btw, i’m a fan of snsd since early 2008.. so i really really do understand how you feel.. well most of it.. =)
Here I am again, hehe. Reading my previous comment, my spelling and grammar are horrible, hehe. I was still shocked with your reply.
I understand your point. I do not agree with it. And after reading your other posts (nationalism, kpop, etc), I can clearly see now that you seem to be a person whom I will not get along with nor like in real life. I respect that you have the right to have your views, no matter how elitist or how obnoxious it may sound to me.
I don’t see the point in commenting anymore.
(although I know I would end up reading your post on what it is to be a TRUE Kpop fan)
I just pray that there’ll come a day that people like you will be really proud and happy with our nation.
here is am again..
wow..
i don’t know how to reply..
it’s not that i agree with you nor do i feel defeated..
its more of, i’m lost..
how can someone like you be real or exist..
sorry, i’m just appalled and surprised, (heck, disgusted is the right word)..
the way you value this exclusivity and you really are sincere about it..
so just to clarify some of your points in your reply though;
masa = mediocrity.. ok..
(and at least i agree with you with the melason thing..)
by the way, what is a TRUE kpop fan for you?
No. Actually, the correct one is -> masa = image of mediocrity. Because if I say “masa = mediocrity”, some idiot will present an argument that NOT ALL masa is mediocre.
This is for another blog post.
uhmm i also don’t want various artists portraying our idols because ,for me, they don’t look good dancing, singing, etc. snsd’s hits. but not to the point that i don’t want to share the fandom to others. damn those guys who said they like snsd because of their bodies. pero tandaan naten na madami ding loyal fans like me. i like snsd because they are snsd!!! haha a lot to explain but that said it all. lets share the fandom kasi ako gusto ko rin dumami ang fans nila. share the love!!!
Hello, I really like this post. When I shared it on FB, my friends were like “This post enlightened me.”, etc. And I must say, one of your predictions came true, one of the gag shows in TV5 parodied “Oh!” and gave it a sucky(believe it or not, “sucky” here is a polite term for it.) And what else? When I went to the market, I saw this pirated CD, and to my horror, it has SNSD’s Genie in it. And you’re also right! We’ll support SNSD all the way, even if those jejemons make the songs you know, jologs.
uhmm can you write about how to defend snsd’s surgery issues? , because anti’s and haters are keep bashing them with that topic and i know that surgery is just normal within korean idols so please write a rational statement with that topic thanks.
Yeah, I was thinking of writing an article of that kind. I am just too busy.
Here’s the rational argument of that article:
Plastic surgery as “trickery”: Isn’t make-up trickery too in that sense? Because they are concealing *something* too.
And sub-arguments that will naturally follow that argument like “But makeup is only external” or “But makeup is just used to enhance their features*, etc. Believe me, me and my co-workers have discussed this in length — multiple times!
We even touched the topic of morality — when is it accepted to have plastic surgery? If you were born with deficiencies? etc etc.
just read the other comments and by the writer himself.. wow.. so sad..
when you think about it, the “jologs” or “pang-masa” state that you don’t want SNSD to be into is basically just the way the public in any country reacts to anything popular. Look at Korean variety shows, they do half-assed dances of Gee or Genie for fun. You can search youtube for some Korean kids or (insert whatever nationality) dancing to an SNSD songs. So now if the Filipinos do it, it’s cheap? So what if class C or D end up loving SNSD, breaks your feeling of superiority? You just can’t stand that you and the poor people have a common interest?
My gosh.
You’re the kind of Filipinos who’ll PROBABLY throw away being a Filipino given the opportunity.
Sad.
Here’s the weird thing about the “jologs” mentality — it’s only happening here. (so you can’t argue that this is happening in Korea too)
Why is it happening here? Two factors: History and Demographics.
First, History. During the Spanish Era, the prevailing caste system was the “The Peninsulares vs The Indios”. Through time, we have carried over this way of thinking. The “elitist” or the “pa-social” is the new Peninsulares and the “masa” is the new “indios”. My point? There was always a divide between the poor people and the rich. It has always been like that in this country so stop kidding yourself. One way or the other, you’ve acted as an “elitist” in your life.
Second, demographics. 90% of the population is class C and class D. Why is that an issue? Let me just clarify that its not an issue of “money” but an issue of “image”. For me (personally), the class C and class D demographics represent an image of mediocrity. A good example of this is the “Melason” couple… they became celebrities JUST BECAUSE the “masses” (90% – C & D) could relate to them (and thus, voted for them). Do they possess the qualities of a bonafide entertainer? I doubt it. There are a lot of example but I hope that you get my point.
To answer your questions:
Yes, but Korea do not have the same social demographics that we have. The representative population of Korea (the “masses”) do not portray an image of mediocrity.
Please refer to my answers on your prevous post.
You know, blind pride is not good. There are a lot of things that Filipinos are good at, like Boxing and Billiards, and I am hell proud of that. But, you have to admit, we do suck at a lot of areas. And I am not afraid to admit or criticize that.
What’s wrong with SNSD being popular in the Philippines? It’ll break your feeling of superiority that your interest is different from the masses? Do you dwell on the feeling that your above the “masa” because your interest is different?
hahaha..
Did the masa dancing Nobody affected WG in a negative way? NO, they only became more popular.
Would SuJu go to the Phil. if Sorry, Sorry was not “over played” in the local radio and gain much popularity? NO.
Do you think SNSD would be happy that only a select “elite” enjoy their music in the Philippines? No.
You see, the problem lies with your way of thinking. So what if the masa likes SNSD? So what if ASAP/whatever show does a rendition of Kissing You (they do that in Korea all the time)? If these things happen, none of it will destroy SNSD, on the contrary, it’ll only make them stronger, happier (knowing they made a lot of people happy), and actually a bigger chance for them to visit the Philippines.
It’s only your elitist air of superiority that would be bruised.
Too bad, SNSD is gaining popularity and I would be so glad if school kids in vegetable costumes would dance Oh! in this years Nutrition Month!
You’ve given a lot of good arguments, but I only have time to argue some. I am thinking of writing a follow-up article that will discuss the “jologs” mentality in depth and will address your arguments.
So let’s start:
One of the objective of creating a social group or, for this discussion, a community is to establish a sense of identity. When I join a car club, say The Estrada Club, I am making a statement that I am a proud owner of an Estrada. Of course, to be a member of the said club, one has to own an Estrada. That is the *exclusivity* part of that group.
As a proud member of the local KPOP community, we (the TRUE KPOP FANS) are promoting a certain image or identity that we want to portray to the world. The problem is, when the masses identify themselves as KPOP fans, that certain image that we want to portray is lost. The identity that we are promoting is lost.
Do we have a “feeling of superiority” because we are KPOP fans? No. We are quite happy if people would just leave us alone. We, KPOP fans, treasure the *exclusivity* of our community. Why? Because we want to protect the *identity* of a true KPOP fan.
“As a fan, I should be happy about this. I should be throwing house parties every week to celebrate. BUT I AM NOT. In fact, I hate that SNSD’s Genie is being transmitted on local airwaves.”
Exactly what I felt when Super Junior became popular here. I mean, dati tayo lang
yung nakikinig ng KPOP, ni hindi pa nga makarelate yung schoolmates ko
before and they would even call the boys we admire as gays and even doodled
on their pictures na nasa desk ko nun, but when they
became popular here, nakikikanta na rin sila and all that. It’s just sad na nakikisakay lang yung iba pero kapag naging laos na, mawawala na rin sila.
But what the hell, we can’t do anything to stop the korean wave in the Philippines. Good thing KPOP becoming mainstream here made me meet Super Junior (Super Show in Manila) ng mas maaga, kahit dati ang plano ko ay sa Korea ko na sila hahanapin at papanuorin. I think the only thing, we, TRUE FANS, can do is to support them no matter what, mainstream here or not, we should not stop supporting. I know and I feel that you’re a true fan, kaya alam kong sikat man o hindi ang SNSD, your love for them will remain. ^^
Although I’m still hating the fact that kpop is becoming “makamasa” or in other word, JOLOGS. :]]
I get what you mean. Just yesterday at a certain anime convention, my friend, who sells CDs and stuff, was playing Oh! on her laptop, so me and her brother were dancing to it. When the song reached its chorus, a group of guys passed by the booth and said, “Look! its SNSD! You like them right dude?” Then the other guy said, “I only look at them because of their bodies.”
For me as a loyal (girl) fan of SNSD, I was disgusted by what they said. SNSD becoming mainstream here in the Philippines is just not entertaining. All the random people who happens to watch them on MYX instantly becomes their “fans” because they like the girls’ bodies and not their talent.
Wow, an SNSD fangirl! I thought such combination did not exist.
Those dudes deserves some hurt.
Jologs is a Filipino slang term or word used to describe persons, things or events who or which are poorly made, dirty-looking, corny and cheap.
So nung sinabi mo na “SNSD WILL SOON BE JOLOGS” parang sinabi mo na rin na “SNSD WILL SOON BE poorly made, dirty-looking, corny and cheap.”
–i don’t think so,, even if they’d be so popular here..
super fan ako ng big bang.. and i’m hoping na pumunta sila dito.. kahit nung dati pa na nakilala sila dito super fan na ko.. sana maulit,, mas lumawak,, at magtuloy-tuloy pa..
#1, stop putting words into my mouth.
#2, “Jologs is a Filipino slang term or word used to describe persons, things or events who or which are poorly made, dirty-looking, corny and cheap.” –> I don’t agree. That definition is for “BADUY” not “jologs”
#3, Thus, I did not mean to say “SNSD WILL SOON BE poorly made, dirty-looking, corny and cheap.” but rather “SNSD will soon be accessed by people who are classified as Class C and Class D citizens”.
i was really impressed with your entry. i was also afraid that my favorite kpop band & their song would be popular here. Thank God, Big Bang wasn’t that really popular. You can’t still hear them over the radio, watch them in myx, or even guests in tv local shows. (referring to big bang) POP GIRLS & XLR8 are one of the most JOLOGS. they’re not only Jologs but also imitaters. :c They’re irritating. especially the pop girls..
*Thank God, Big Bang wasn’t that really popular, yet.* ‘Cos I know jologs people woould also imitate them. Especially when they released their COME BACK album, soon.
) [excited to hear their new songs, AGAIN]
sa totoo lang nung una, un din ang kinatatakot ko..and im really wishing na sana hindi sobrang sumikat ung “genie” at “gee” kagaya ng “nobody”..kasi tulad nga ng sinabi mo, nagiging jologs. i hate it when im hearing the song everywhere..even my relatives are dancing to it too..pero kung titingnan, di ba ang sumikat lang at ang naging jologs e ung song? ganito, try asking random people(ung “masa” type of people, wag teenagers kasi malamang updated na cla, alm mo namang sumasabay ang teens sa uso) kung sinu kumanta ng “nobody”..sigurado iilan lang makakasagot niyan. it means wonder girls are not that popular..just the poor song..kaya di mo kaylangang sabihin na wag silang pupunta dito..kasi every filipino sone is looking forward to watch SNSD in our OWN shores..palagay na nating kilala sila ng masa pero d naman yan aabot sa point na makikinood sila sa concert ng SNSD..unlike the TRUE sones whom are dying to see them in our shores..i myself is one of them..kasi d ko afford ung mga needs para makapunta sa korea, di rin ako marunong maghangeul. imagine nanood ka sa korea, sobrang saya mo nkita mo sila, pero di mo naman maexpress sarili mo kasi puro koreano katabi mo, ung mga ganung bagay ba, iba kasi kapag filipino sones katabi mo, kahit di mo kilala pwede mo kausapin kasi parehas kau ng language, kasi diba mas masaya pag may kashare ka sa masasayang happenings? lalo na pag super fan ka?
ang haba na pala nito..sorry naman..^^ i don’t know if you understand my point..basta un..i respect yours too, i just shared mine..haha..^^
let’s pray na sana pumunta SNSD dito..para matuwa sila na hindi lang pala sila sa korea sikat..pati pala philippines na conquer na nila!! i’m really dying to see those flattered faces of them..^^
i was googling randomly when i stumbled with your post.. and I laughed.. What if Willy Revillame really danced Gee? WTF..
I have been a fan of SNSD for quite some time.. And I agree with you that SNSD being mainstream here in the Philippines will suck their image. Well, I am not against SNSD rising on the charts because they will get more popular here and it will be possible that they will hold concerts here because of that..
Hi there. I just read your entry and… although I have to admit that I’m also an overprotective and selfish (just a little) fan [I'm a Shawol, btw lol] I think we still have to give credit to the fact that Kpop songs/vids are being aired/shown on local stations/channels. Why? Because in that way, they gain popularity, and there are greater chances of them coming to the Philippines to hold concerts, fanmeets, etc.
DANG! you’re a bitch… at first.. i totally agreed with you.. but your definition of jologs… it ain’t right…
How do you define jologs? Sorry to disappointment you but that is the most compelling definition that I can think of. Please enlighten us.
Im a certified sone and a yoonaddict for almost more than a year now! pareho tau ng routine spazzing and googling any snsd related stuff buong araw.
At first i was laughing about this blog, but when I read at the end my eye open widely. I will be really pissed if this happens. But as you said we can’t do anything about it if this happens. But this doesn’t stop me from listening to them.
as much as i love soshi, I hope they never come here.. it’s selfish but if you think about it, it’s their image I want to protect as well
i cannot agree with you more..
well, snsd is like the sexbomb girls in korea. their fans are the ‘masa’ in korea.
and tv MCs like willie revillame is just is the equivalent of tv MCs in Korea.
the malilibog old men….hahaha. well talk about those older male fans in korea, parang ganun lang iyon.
i agree with chichin, mga pinoy nga naman, elitista at kapag napunta na sa ‘local’, kadalasan nagiging ‘jologs’ na.
samantalang sa korea, pang-masa naman talaga ang snsd at iba pang kpop idols.
these kpop idols are working their asses off to make good music and spread it all over, then pagdating dito, ang mga fans nila mismo ang ayaw ikalat ang kanilang music dahil lang ayaw nilang maging ‘jologs’ o magmukhang ‘jologs’.
on another note, showbiz is show business. business is for profit afterall. bakit ba dinala dito ng tuluyan ng kpop? para sa pera dahil may market nga dito. mahirap na pigilan ang pag-”lipad” ng snsd dito unless most of the fans themselves fully stop supporting the girls here para tuluyan na silang mawala dito. (pero parang bad feedback naman yata yun para sa kanila kung mabalitaan nilang ganun ang nangyari sa kanila dito)
well to each his own.
i couldn’t agree with you more.. i don’t want them to be popular here because they will become “jologs”.. i mean, i don’t want to see “tambays” dancing to their songs (which already happened recently according to a friend).. i know what we want is kinda selfish but i really think it’s for their own good..
Thankfully, Gee did not get *that* popular here. I guess Pinoys are not so into cutesy girls.
I was just searching for the definition of “jologs” and came across this blog of yours. First, it’s a great blog because I can’t stop reading it.
Second, Although I’m no Kpop fan as you are, I understand what you mean. My roomie’s an ultimate Kpop addict and she was dreading for that same day. Before “nobody” and “gee” became so popular, it was nice to hear them once in a while, but now that they’re everywhere, they became quite annoying already. T_T again, kudos for the great blog!
Yo, thanks!
omg i love ur blog! my sentiments exactly!
though I’m concerned with the whole kpop scene being famous here in the ph. (suju, f(x), 2ne1, wg, 4minute etc) I hate the fact that it has reach mainstream. I’d rather listen to them thru the net than hear them playing in local radio stations. I’m not passed the stage of being a selfish fan. hahaha! <3
Thanks! <3 Long live selfish fans!
)
I saw a trackback coming from your blog that’s why I’m here. Hehe.
But I can’t even see my link here…parang ang weird tuloy.
Anyway, SNSD was one and my first ever Korean girl group I discovered since they debuted. Well, dahil kasi ung mga naunang nakahiligan kong Korean Boy Band is part of SM Entertainment also like TVXQ and Super Junior. Wala talaga akong masabi sa girls na to, hindi lang sila pretty, ang hot din nila and you can’t really compare their fashion style sa ibang artists all over the world. Pati nga ung ibang asian countries, ginaya narin sila eh…I can’t remember kung ano, basta Indonesia ba un? O.O Ay ewan.
By the way, nakapunta ka po ba sa Korea? I wanna go there also…sabi nga ng Ate at Mama ko, gusto ko na daw ata maging Korean kasi obviously ung culture nila is nagagaya ko narin, pati ung expressions and language. Kekeke. Na impluwensyahan lang…
How much ba papuntang Korea? haha.
Me too! Not so long ago, I said to myself that I will go there if SNSD will have their first SOLO concert. Well, they did. But the freakin tickets sold out after 3 minutes. Good luck naman diba?
I don’t think your definition of jologs is appropriate enough. It seemed too vague to me. To a Filipino, it would make sense; however, if you read it at a foreigner’s point of view, it doesn’t give out the same negative vibe a Filipino would understand. It’s funny how it’s so hard to explain Filipino colloquialism to someone not familiar with the culture. D:
My definition of “jologs” would be a person who’s tacky… Someone who exudes the opposite of sophistication. It’s the lack of refinement, whether intellectually, in etiquette, or in fashion. :/
shet pwede bang mahal kita?
my exact sentiment!!
inaamin kong elitista ako sa kpop fandom.
AS IN MAHAL KITA.
FORM A NO TO JOLOGS FOR KPOP MOVEMENT PLEASE
)
Hey, if you’re as pretty as YoonA, why not?
)
When you get to from that club, give a buzz.
I’d just like to do some devil’s advocate on everyone reading this (including you Ian Uy, hehe), and please don’t take this as one of those you consider as ad hominem…
What about the Hollywood boy band craze in the Philippines during the 90’s? Everyone, elite or mass were following their tracks and their (probably) music videos? The jologs labeling was still on its premature stage during that time, right? Was associating those bands to the general public (particularly the masses) already jologs? I just need some clarifications. Hehe. Thanks.
Nevertheless, I respect your side because we all have our own Weltenshaungg (worldviews) and no one can keep us from speaking our minds as long as we are on this democratic territory. I think it’s all about respect on everyone’s perspective which includes yours, Ian Uy, and the other people.
Almost all the people I know thinks that Westlife is jologs.
errr…jologs….from the ground and roots of it,it wasn’t been defined accurately in the first place. From my understanding,it was used to replace a term that will be commonly hurt people’s feelings (that, is to say from the Filipino point of view a.k.a. messy Filipino morals) to make it sound good in short, though the definition isn’t clear. It’s relative to the one who’s always been using them to identify a certain/group of people, commonly it is applied to those/groups of people who are using certain trend/items but a sight for sore eye to the beholder and can’t accept the fact that they have them too (hence, one will become irritated by the mere knowledge of it). But one thing is for sure,it’s just to hide the hurtful term that is used prior using “jologs” term. Basically, using the term “jologs” falls to the side of an elitist perspective.
just my opinion.
Hey, hi~ nice to meet you!

I hope you will visit and leave a comment
Bye take care~
Hello, glad that you liked my post.
Thanks for visiting.
quoted from someone:
“I really hate that they think that the Pinoy masses cheapen the fandom, that they don’t see what they bring to the bands’ fame and success. Tapos in denial pa sila na kesyo hindi sila selfish. Besides, kung mabenta benta man yung mga fake merchandise sa Quiapo, then that shouldn’t be a problem because the hardcore fans will support them by buying the real stuff. Ganun lang yun, role dapat yun ng fan club kung meron man.
Parang tanga talaga, walang support at all para sa kapwa Pilipino eh. Sobrang crab mentality talaga. They cannot assume that there are more haters ni Sandara dito when she’s got a fucking huge fan base here. Sabi ko sa yo hindi small deal yung mag#1 sa Myx pucha anu ba keber na bulok kuno ang Myx, ang importante, masa yun therefore, MASSIVE ang votes received.
Jologs daw. That’s so immature and ganun talaga sa Pinas eh, you need to swallow that. Kung psycho ang fans sa Japan and Korea, may level of crazy din tayo and that is yung naca-categorize as jologs. Ganun lang yun. Fucking whiners.”
i totally understands you pare/mare or ewan basta.. hahha..
personally.. i don’t even vote in myx @-@
well.. yeah jologs are always be a jolog
so there… yeah im selfish.. but who cares?
thumbs up for this blog
DANG !! I agree <3
im pretty much agree on this!!!
they are my allies!!
khit aq ipnagdadamot ko SNSD sa mga jologs na tao >,<
sana nmn d nlang npnta sa mainstream!
fuck dat!
i hate it!
even my schoolmates like this who are jologs..
exclude kate, king, marcus…
I HATE IT especially posting their pics on facebook as their primary
i define jologs as wanna be fan and lower class of society…
Have you tried “googling” it?
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Jologs
Derived from the combined words daing (salted fish), tuyo (a type of dried fish) and itlog (egg). Dyolog then became Jolog, a term for someone who is tacky, but implied in a more negative tone and often referred to people who belong to the lower class of society.
So was my definition accurate?
” … but implied in a more negative tone and often referred to people who belong to the lower class of society”.
I understand what you mena. B4 i was emberrased too when they cover nobody in asap and all over the place. But now i just see it as wow they really like the song that’s why they are doing that. And if they are going to cover genie and play it on radio over and over again that’s just awesome, it shows that a lott of people really like snsd. And about the jeep thing yeah i’m sure they will be someone like that, i have poster of snsd in my room ^^
In korea there are uncle snsd fans so why can’t there be filipino uncle fans?
Don’t be ashamed where you guys are from! But i just hope not everyone will buy snsd album as a copy album but also a real album, i just hope sm give the money they really desurv! Instead of being emberassed if they cover snsd song just think of it as wow snsd are so big now!
I totally agree on your list! HAHAHA!
)
It’s quite a bit of funny but in a reality YES! its true! =))
I’ve always been thinki’n about that when SNSD will be popular here in the Philippines, and i was like (OMG!! 0-0 ) because GENIE hit the myx daily top 10 already.
first of all~~ pareha tayong favorite~ kissing you.. anyway, i understand this, i have the same feeling.. i keep the love all to myself even if i sobrang want to explode and brag about them like crazy.. i get your point,, if they’re gonna be everywhere it would be like SNSD’s element of being “precious & rare” is lost.. yung parang pg may isang kanta na maganda~ tas narinig mo sa jip, tumutugtog sa kung saan-saang lugar, at kinakanta ng mga katabi mo na hindi mo ini-expect na kakanta ng ganun~~ kahit gaano ka ganda ung kanta, biglaang pumapanget..in my case at least.. that’s what we get for living in a world. hndi nmn natin sila ma pipigilan kpg nagus2han nila. well ganyan tlga ang buhay… siguro pag sobrang sumikat na ung snsd d2, eventually parang hindi na natin makikita yung mga girls as kasing precious like how we look at them now.. time will come na it will slowly deteriorate, which is ayoko sanang mangyari.. pero ang importante ngaun eh sana wag silang pumunta d2~ expect the worse pg nangyari yun. only GOD knows kung gaano ko sila ka gustong makita, pero wag d2.. dun na sa seoul. even if it would take me how many years bago ko sila makita…
Yeah, right on! I have always told the pinoy SONES that if they really want to watch SNSD in concert, they should save up and go to Korea. It would only cost you 5,000 PHP for the airfare (See http://www.cebupacificair.com/).
ill categorize your point of view as a selfish fan. understandable, nakakasawa kasi pag naririnig mo cla everywhere.
by the way your blog implies. you are being elitist..
i believe the term “jologs” is a rather term for “common” or “mababaw”. you just like standing out or being rather different. but somehow there’s still a jolog inside of us. kasi we are a part of a certain mass. still a part of a third world country na ang tingin din ng ibang lahi ee jologs din tayong mga pinoy. as a race.
i will be purely candid as possible. the way you define and look at the events are on a bitter note. frustration yan, and uhm. you are being too judgemental.
Selfishness is just a manifestation of being overprotective.
So how do you define jologs?
jologs – someone being being associated with things na pang-masa.
i dunno why. pero ang pinoy tlga npka-elitist. haha
yes. i believe you are being overprotective. but that doesn’t give the grounds to stomp on a jolog. ^_^
In defense of KPOP: Is KPOP Jologs?…
Recently, there have been a lot of hate towards the KPOP fandom in the Philippines and KPOP itself. There are a couple of Facebook fanpages that’s dedicated solely in hating KPOP. While searching for the term “KPOP Jologs” on Google,…
